Details are beginning to emerge from Sky, that their takeover of Formula 1 broadcasting in the UK is not just simply a case of putting on the same old show onto a different channel.
Sky has announced that they will launch a dedicated Sky Sports F1 HD channel from March 9th, claiming that it is set to “reinvent interactive television”. The launch is just one week ahead of the start of the 2012 season, so the build up is sure to be full of anticipation.
When you think about it the possibilities are really almost endless here. Every one of the twenty or so F1 cars that are flying around the circuit can have it’s own camera – not to mention all of the cameras around the track or in the pit lane, in helicopters and so on. Put the viewer in control of which camera he is seeing and when and yes – it’s a game changer for interactive television.
“What we are going to do is take Formula 1 as a sport and offer different ways of seeing it, be it by on-board cameras or with the data tracker that tells you where the cars are.” says Martin Turner, who will be the Executive Producer of the Sky Sports F1 HD channel.
On top of this, Sky is also readying an accompanying Sky Sports F1 HD iPad app so that Sky subscribers can keep up to date on the move. While details are somewhat sketchy at this time, it is believed that the iPad app which will allow multi-screen viewing will also work in conjunction with the tv channel to bring a truly different experience to what we have known up to now.
